I feel bad Denji blame himself for what happened, the times where he rescued a cat instead of a family.
But he made the right choice. Accepting the challenge in the terms the devils presented it, was akin to negotiate with terrorist. The moment you let kidnapping works has a negotiation tool, they only have to kidnap new people to force you to whatever. In the end inocent people are hurt. The way Denji sabotaged that, protected other people from getting kidnapping for more devil mind games.
